Eligibility and Entry Requirements
- Applicants must be actively working as a laboratory scientist or analyst in an asbestos testing facility in Australia or New Zealand.
- The applicant must complete the official application form and submit by 20th January 2026.
- The applicant must confirm they have read and accepted the Terms and Conditions of Entry.
The Prize
Registration to the next ASTM Rook Conference on Asbestos Issues to be held in Europe in 2028.
Conference registration, flights (economy) and accommodation for the duration of the conference.
Award Criteria
Applicants will be assessed on their demonstrated excellence in the following areas:
Analytical Expertise
- Proven accuracy in identification of asbestos fibres, such as bulk, dust, soils, ores, or air.
- Proficiency in Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) and/or Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM).
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot analytical challenges.
Quality and Technical Practice
- Active participation in laboratory QA/QC programs
- Understanding of calibration and maintenance of pumps, rotameters, and microscopes.
Innovation and Leadership
- Application of innovation to various situations to improve accuracy, efficiency, or safety.
- Sharing knowledge or mentoring others within the laboratory environment.
- Engagement in professional development or contribution to the broader asbestos community.
Terms and Conditions
- The winner agrees that FAMANZ and Expert Testing Services may use their name, likeness, and nomination for promotional purposes associated with the award.
- Prize funds must be used towards professional development, research, or an innovation that enhances asbestos testing capability.
- The recipient will be invited to present a 10–15 minute presentation at a future ASBESTOS Conference, held in Australia, outlining how the prize has supported advancement in asbestos analysis or laboratory science.
- The winner must attend ASBESTOS 2026 to receive the award in person.
